Susanna:
Debra Selig The final of three events of a year-long celebration of 250th anniversary of Mozart’s birth, a fully staged production of Le Nozze di Figaro (The Marriage of Figaro) to be held on Friday, November 17 at 8 PM at First Congregational Church in New London and Friday, November 25 at 8 PM and Sunday, December 3 at 6 PM at Trinity-on-Main Performing Arts Center in New Britain. One of the best-loved and most performed opera of all times, this profound comedy of the human condition combines memorable characters, sparkling banter and insightful social commentary into a masterpiece of love and individuality. Mozart’s intention to write an opera that was “really funny throughout” is achieved as he adroitly demonstrates the fine line all lovers walk between comedy and tragedy. Whether married, unfaithful, affianced or in the throes of adolescent love, all the opera’s lovers eventually come face-to-face with their shared humanity in a story rife with glorious misadventure. From the Countess’ lament about her husband’s infidelities, to Figaro’s menacing challenge to the Count and Susannah’s wickedly enticing invitation, all the opera’s arias will convince you that Mozart deserves the title “Musical Genius.” Making his opera debut in this traditional production is director David Jaffe; Figaro will be conducted by the Virtuosi Artistic Director, Maestro Adrian Mackiewicz, and will be performed in Italian with English supertitles featuring the Connecticut Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra, period costumes, elaborate staging, and chorus. Starring bass-baritone Colin Brady as the conniving valet, Figaro, soprano Debra Selig as his bride-to-be, Susanna, baritone Tim Hill as the lusting Count, soprano Jurate Svedaite-Waller as his neglected Countess, and a supporting cast of strong professionals and local performers.
